About This Site
An independent, free reference for bank holidays in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
What this site is for
UK Bank Holidays answers the questions people ask about bank holidays: when the next one is, what the dates are this year and next, whether today is one, and how the rules differ around the UK. It also offers free tools for planning leave and checking the weather for a long weekend.
The site is independent. It is not run by, or affiliated with, GOV.UK or any government department.
Where the dates come from
- Published years. Dates are checked against the official GOV.UK bank holiday list, which is released under the Open Government Licence.
- Other years. Dates from 1971 to 2050 are calculated from the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971, the royal proclamations made under it and the published substitute-day convention.
- Historic changes. Rules are applied only from the year they took effect, for example New Year's Day from 1974 and St Andrew's Day from 2007.
Future dates can change. The government can add a bank holiday or move one by royal proclamation, usually with months of notice. When that happens the site is updated.
What this site is not
Nothing here is legal or employment advice. Whether you get a bank holiday off, and how you are paid for it, depends on your contract. For formal purposes such as payroll or legal deadlines, confirm dates with GOV.UK.
