Is Easter Monday a bank holiday in Scotland?

Not nationally. Easter Monday is absent from Scotland's list of bank holidays, so banks and businesses there may work as normal.

Scottish councils can set their own local public holidays, and some choose Easter Monday. Whether you are off depends on your council and your employer, so check locally. Schools are generally on their Easter break either way.

What is Easter Monday?

It is the day after Easter Sunday and the last day of the four-day Easter weekend. It has no major church service of its own; its role is as a day of rest and of outdoor customs such as egg rolling.

What's open on Easter Monday: shops, supermarkets, post and trains

  • Shops and supermarkets: open, usually with bank holiday hours. This is the contrast with Easter Sunday, when large shops in England and Wales must close.
  • Banks: branches are closed in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
  • Post: Royal Mail does not normally deliver on bank holidays, and Post Office opening varies by branch.
  • Trains and buses: often a Sunday or reduced timetable, with engineering works common.

Why Easter Monday is a bank holiday

Easter Monday was one of the original bank holidays created for England, Wales and Ireland by the Bank Holidays Act 1871. Scotland's list in the same Act was different and did not include it, which is why the two calendars still disagree today.
