Bank Holiday Payment Dates for Benefits and Pensions

When a benefit or State Pension payment is due on a bank holiday, it normally arrives early: on the working day before. Here is the rule, the benefits it covers and the expected dates for every bank holiday ahead.

Next bank holiday: when you will be paid

If your payment is due on

Christmas Day,

expect it on

England and Wales, under the standard rule.

The rule: the working day before

GOV.UK puts it in one sentence: if your payment date is on a weekend or a bank holiday, you will usually be paid on the working day before. It adds that this may be different for Child Benefit. (How to have your benefits paid.)

A working day is Monday to Friday, not counting bank holidays. So a payment due on a bank holiday Monday normally arrives on the Friday, and at Christmas, when bank holidays and a weekend run together, it can arrive several days early.

The amount does not change. If your payment date is not a bank holiday, nothing changes at all.

Expected payment dates for every bank holiday, 2026 and 2027

Choose your nation. These dates apply the standard working-day-before rule to each bank holiday. They are expected dates, not an official schedule: DWP and the devolved agencies confirm arrangements before each holiday.

How each payment is affected

Universal Credit

Universal Credit is paid monthly on the same date. If that date is a weekend or bank holiday, you are paid on the working day before. (GOV.UK: how you're paid.)

State Pension and Pension Credit

State Pension is normally paid every four weeks, on a weekday decided by the last two digits of your National Insurance number. You might be paid earlier if your normal payment day is a bank holiday. (GOV.UK: when you're paid.)

PIP, Attendance Allowance, Carer's Allowance, ESA and JSA

These follow the same general rule for benefits paid by DWP: a payment due on a bank holiday is usually made on the working day before.

Child Benefit

Child Benefit is paid by HMRC and is the exception. HMRC publishes the exact date for each bank holiday, and a holiday that applies in only one nation can move the payment later rather than earlier. Always check HMRC's Child Benefit bank holiday table.

Scotland and Northern Ireland

Scotland

Benefits paid by Social Security Scotland, such as Scottish Child Payment and Adult Disability Payment, are usually paid earlier if they are due on a bank holiday. Scotland has its own bank holidays, including 2 January and St Andrew's Day, so the dates can differ from the rest of the UK. (mygov.scot: bank holiday payment dates.)

Northern Ireland

In Northern Ireland you will usually be paid on the last working day before the holiday. That includes the two bank holidays only Northern Ireland has: St Patrick's Day and 12 July. (nidirect: how benefits and pensions are paid.)

If payday falls on a bank holiday

Wages are different: no law says when an employer must pay if payday lands on a bank holiday. Most pay on the last working day before, because Bacs, the system used for most salaries, does not process payments on bank holidays. Check your contract or ask payroll.

Direct Debits due on a bank holiday are normally taken on the next working day instead.

Bank holiday payment dates: questions

Will I get paid early on a bank holiday?

Usually, yes. If a benefit or State Pension payment is due on a bank holiday or a weekend, it is usually paid on the working day before. Child Benefit can be different.

When is the next bank holiday payment change?

The next bank holiday in England and Wales is Christmas Day on Friday 25 December 2026. A payment due that day would normally arrive on Thursday 24 December 2026.

When will I get paid Universal Credit on a bank holiday?

If your Universal Credit payment date falls on a bank holiday or weekend, you are paid on the working day before.

Is State Pension paid early on a bank holiday?

It can be. State Pension is paid every four weeks on a set weekday, and you might be paid earlier if your normal payment day is a bank holiday.

Is Child Benefit paid early on a bank holiday?

Often, but not always. HMRC publishes a table of Child Benefit dates for each bank holiday. Payments due on a UK-wide bank holiday generally come earlier, while a holiday that applies in one nation only can push the payment later there.

When are benefits paid at Christmas?

Under the standard rule: a payment due on Fri 25 Dec would arrive on Thursday 24 December 2026; a payment due on Mon 28 Dec would arrive on Thursday 24 December 2026; a payment due on Fri 1 Jan would arrive on Thursday 31 December 2026. DWP confirms the Christmas dates each year.

Do I get more money when I am paid early?

No. The amount is the same. It only arrives sooner, which means a longer wait until the following payment.

What if my wages are due on a bank holiday?

There is no legal rule for wages. It depends on your employer, though most pay on the last working day before, because bank transfers by Bacs are not processed on bank holidays.

What should I do if my payment does not arrive?

Check the date you were expecting, then contact the office that pays the benefit. Contact details are on your award letter.
