What is open and closed on a bank holiday

A bank holiday closes banks by law. Everything else is custom or company policy, so it varies.

Banks
Branches are closed. Online and app banking, cash machines and Faster Payments carry on as normal. Bacs and CHAPS payments are not processed until the next working day.
Post
Royal Mail does not normally deliver or collect on bank holidays, and most Post Office branches are closed. Hours vary by branch.
Shops
Most shops and supermarkets open, often with shorter hours. In England and Wales large shops must close on Easter Sunday and Christmas Day; Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own trading rules.
Bins and council services
Council offices are shut and bin collections often move by a day. Check your council's website for the revised days.
Trains and buses
Many operators run a Sunday or reduced timetable, and engineering work is often scheduled for bank holiday weekends.
GPs and pharmacies
GP surgeries are usually closed and pharmacies open on a rota with reduced hours. NHS 111 covers urgent medical needs.
Schools
State schools are closed. Many bank holidays fall inside school holidays in any case.

What it means for work and pay

Many employers give bank holidays off, but it is not a legal right: whether you work, and whether you are paid more for it, depends on your contract. Employers may count bank holidays as part of your 5.6 weeks of statutory annual leave.

Payments and benefits

Wages and Direct Debits sent by Bacs are not processed on a bank holiday. If a benefit or State Pension payment is due on a bank holiday, it is usually paid on the working day before.

What counts as a working day

For banks, courts and most contracts a working day is Monday to Friday, excluding bank holidays. Deadlines counted in working days skip bank holidays as well as weekends, and because the calendars differ, a day can be a working day in England and not in Scotland.

How this checker works

The answer comes from the same dataset as the rest of this site: the official GOV.UK bank holiday list for published years, extended with the statutory rules for other years. It checks England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland separately and uses UK time, so it changes over at midnight in London wherever you are.

Substitute days count

When a bank holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the following weekday becomes the bank holiday. The checker shows the substitute day as the bank holiday, not the weekend date, because that is the day banks close.
