Which Easter days are bank holidays?
Two of the four. Good Friday is a bank holiday in every part of the UK. Easter Monday is a bank holiday in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, but not in Scotland.
Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday are not bank holidays. That gives a four-day weekend in most of the UK and a three-day one in Scotland, unless your council or employer adds Easter Monday as a local holiday.
What's open over Easter
Shops can open as normal on Good Friday and Easter Monday. Easter Sunday is different: in England and Wales, large shops over 280 square metres must close for the day. Smaller shops, pharmacies, petrol stations and restaurants are not affected. Bank branches close on the two bank holidays and public transport often runs a reduced timetable with engineering works.
Why does Easter change every year?
Easter follows the moon, not the calendar. Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21 March, a rule set by the early church to keep the festival close to the spring equinox.
That gives a window of 35 days. The earliest possible Easter Sunday is 22 March and the latest is 25 April. Good Friday and Easter Monday move with it, and so did the old Whit Monday holiday before it was replaced by the fixed Spring bank holiday.
Orthodox Easter
Orthodox churches work out the date from the older Julian calendar, so their Easter usually falls one to five weeks later. In 2027 Orthodox Easter Sunday is Sunday 2 May 2027.
Easter school holidays
Schools in England and Wales normally break up for two weeks around Easter, but the exact dates are set by councils, academies and individual schools, so they differ from place to place. When Easter is very early or late, some areas fix the holiday in early April instead, and the bank holidays then fall in term time.
In Scotland the spring break is usually the first two weeks of April, and Northern Ireland takes a shorter break around the Easter weekend. Check your school or council for the dates that apply to you.
